Welcome to SweetLand.

In her second solo show at freejade, Christine Jones invites us to come in close. But be warned. At the same time she questions whether we are prepared for what we'll see. At first blush, we find a tightly woven world of frivolity, youth and promise. Compact, intimate and bright, It is the first sip of Absinthe, as if eternal Spring or the green fairy has landed upon our shoulder, authoring a fresh, momentary glimpse. In acute contrast, the forms of each narrative are constructed with such calculated restraint, that each precise pen mark underlines its purposefulness as if a punctuation of its right to being.   Each mark willfully outlines a path to perhaps our own unconscious, scratching beneath the surface with each hatching. It is this duplicity that gives SweetLand its unique and beguiling tension. When we focus in deeply, there is something more, some underlying, unconscious dis-ease. Jones' figures propose and confess. Their secret promises pierce the thin veil between love and agony, protection and wantonness.    After all, one should not trust the weather, or a girl, or a boy.
